Smoky, pungent, and animal evocations of peat, sweat, and musk oil mingle with scents of peach, Rainier cherry, and grapefruit on the nose of Keller’s 2009 Riesling G-Max, then saturate the palate in an enveloping manner impressively unlike that of the other dry Rieslings in his present collection. This is so richly-fruited and plush in texture, and its abundance of flavor registers as such an extract-rich infusion, that the contrast with the sense of transparency and vibrancy projected by the corresponding Abtserde could scarcely be more dramatic. Yet even so, this G-Max comes off as anything but weighty. Peaty smokiness; musky floral essences; crushed chalk; peach kernel and cherry pit piquancy, all impinge distinctively amid an otherwise seamlessly dense ocean of flavor whose finish both engulfs and buoys you. Eleven days (!) after having been opened for my initial tasting, contents of this same bottle of G-max were still full of vibratory energy. I imagine at least a 15 year run of glory for this remarkable Riesling.

Weingut Keller

Das Weingut Klaus Peter Keller in Flörsheim-Dalsheim ist ein Weingut im deutschen Weinbaugebiet Rheinhessen. Der Inhaber ist Klaus Peter Keller, welcher auch als Kellermeister tätig ist.

Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts floh Johann Leonhard Keller vor den Unruhen der Französischen Revolution aus der Schweiz und ließ sich in Dalsheim nieder. Die guten Beziehungen zum Klerus ermöglichten ihm 1789 den Erwerb des zuvor in Stiftsbesitz befindlichen Dalsheimer Oberen Hubackers, der seitdem im Alleinbesitz der Kellers ist.

Die aktuellen Rieslingreben dieser Lage wurden zwischen 1972 und 1985 angepflanzt. Mit dem Jahrgang 2000 übernahm Klaus Peter Keller von seinem Vater, Klaus Keller, hauptverantwortlich die Weinbergs- und Kellerarbeit des rheinhessischen Traditionsgutes. Zuvor absolvierte er sein Studium an der Forschungsanstalt Geisenheim und arbeitete in Südafrika sowie im Burgund.

Die VDP-klassifizierten Lagen des Weinguts sind Dalsheimer Hubacker, Westhofener Kirchspiel, Westhofener Brunnenhäuschen (mit der Gewann Abtserde als Filetstück)[1], Westhofener Morstein, Dalsheimer Bürgel, Frauenberg, Pettenthal (Roter Hang) und Hipping (Roter Hang, seit 2011).
